NRA’s Answer to Gun Violence: Arm Everybody

Who’d a thunk it? The NRA’s plan for preventing gun violence is to just arm everybody and to turn our schools into what amounts to a military zone, protected by armed forces, according to The National Rifle Association’s CEO Wayne LaPierre. But why stop there? I mean, innocent people are everywhere right? So we really need these armed forces everywhere from movie theaters, shops, ice skating rinks, sports events …well, just everywhere. Our teachers and shop keepers and theater management, Sunday School teachers, churches all need militia style weapons training and need to arm themselves from all the crazies out there with guns. Guns aren’t the problem, of course. It’s the lack of guns that is the problem, Wayne LaPierre says.

Imagine in the NRAs’ vision of the world that teachers are hired more for their expertise with weaponry than their educational skills, not to mention that the GOP, in its war on education, goes to great lengths to reduce funding for schools and to attack teacher’s unions. Is the GOP now going to decide to fund placing armed guards in every school in America or to purchase the weapons and training for every school teacher in America? Or would school teachers be required to provide their own guns? And what about every other place in the US that mass shootings have occurred, such as malls, theaters, business offices, rural roads (as reported below) … well, just about everywhere?

Wayne LaPierre attempted to blind us all with bullshit by throwing out red herrings. The reason for gun violence is movies, music and video games according to LaPierre. He discounts completely the fact that easy access to assault weapons and high capacity ammo clips are the common link to most of the mass murders in the US.

Obviously, this is all horseshite. Hollywood movies and violent-themed video games are viewed and played by young males in every country of the world. Yet, other countries do not experience the massacres that the U.S. does. The difference? The guns.

At least 24 Americans every day (8-9,000 a year) are killed by people with guns – and that doesn’t count the ones accidentally killed by guns or who commit suicide with a gun. Count them and you can triple that number to over 25,000.

That means the United States is responsible for over 80 percent of all the gun deaths in the 23 richest countries combined.

Gun violence is an American problem. The U.S. has 5% of the world’s population and 50% of the world’s guns. While the number of Americans who own guns is actually decreasing…..yes, decreasing…..the number of guns that American gun owners have is increasing. Think about that.

30 years ago, 50% of households owned guns….in 2010 it was only 32%. 20% of gun owners own 65% of all guns in the U.S. Source

More Reaction to the NRA Press Conference

Just when it seemed the meltdown on the right couldn’t get any more spectacular, after House Speaker John Boehner’s Plan B humiliation Thursday night, the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre self-destructed Friday morning. His bizarre self-serving tirade blamed everything but guns for the Sandy Hook massacre last week. He proposed placing an armed police officer in every school.

“The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” he pronounced fatuously.

As usual for the NRA, the solution to gun violence is more guns. But finally, Americans are seeing that for the destructive illogic that it is. LaPierre is truly one of the bad guys. We don’t need guns to fight him, though, we just need votes. And we need the politicians elected with our votes to stand up for us. Source

“Walking out of another [Newtown] funeral and was handed the NRA transcript. The most revolting, tone deaf statement I’ve ever seen,” tweeted Rep. Chris Murphy (D-CT), who will be sworn in as the state’s next Senator in January.

“Their press conference was a shameful evasion of the crisis facing our country,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Instead of offering solutions to a problem they have helped create, they offered a paranoid, dystopian vision of a more dangerous and violent America where everyone is armed and no place is safe.”

While Wayne LaPierre was speaking, some guy was walking or driving down a rural road in Pa, shooting people, including two state troopers. This is breaking news, so the story is still developing.

Four people were killed, including the gunman, and three state troopers were injured Friday in a series of shootings over a wide area of central Pennsylvania, authorities said.

Blair County District Attorney Richard Consiglio told NBC station WJAC of Johnstown, Pa., that one of the troopers was shot, one was injured in a vehicle crash and one was injured by flying glass from a bullet that was shot through his car window.

None sustained life-threatening injuries in the shooting incident, which occurred at multiple locations over several miles around Frankstown Township, Geeseytown and Hollidaysburg, about 75 miles west of Harrisburg.

Kind of ironic and unfortunate for the NRA that this happened during their weird press conference calling for arms for everybody and all schools to be armed. What do they propose now? All rural roads to also be patrolled by armed guards?
